Noise Abatement

The Spring Flood is on. Life waxes and wanes, and the rumble of the air around me, the currents by me, and the ground shaking underfoot energize me almost as much as my renascent pine mold allergies. Snow is off the ground, and the Spring Flood is on.

Winter requires a more measured approach. Gear must suit the conditions. Goals need to be attainable. Poor Practices Predict Piss-Poor Performances. With the Thaw everyone is feeling the buzz and impatience to Get Going, and anyone who advocates a more measured approach is annoying. I feel it. All of the stuff I do in the hibernating months, the projects and trainings and blogs and trip-planning and outreach and (sigh) self-promoting rush and roar in the background of every day. This susurrus, this static, this White Noise fills in all the quiet places in my brain. These are the places I build from. These are the places I write from. I would much rather be out and doing. I must be here and now.

This is what I love about having seasons. My clients are driven to engage, explore, experience. I am more measured and that can be annoying, so today I let the springtide sweep me through. Training there, writing here, next a little light logging…

The season beckons me to a dead run, all the planning and bookings and lectures and gearing-up In My WAY. Politics? Cost me 15 of last years’ Canadian clients, with windy bluster not of my choosing. Gear and Goodies? More expensive. See Politics, above. Writing? Having to be involved and informed and injecting common sense into my surroundings keeps a steady pressure on sangfroid. In the final analysis, letting this noise go by me isn’t optimal, so I will do what I can to lessen its impact on me, my clients, our outdoors and our countries.

Busting out of hibernation, winter quarters, FOMO and fear. Head up the trail, and feel the roaring fall off.

Today? Noise Abated.
